Federal board says a Columbus resin plant never answered its safety fixes

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board says Yenkin-Majestic/OPC Polymers has not acted on or meaningfully replied to any of the five recommendations it sent in December 2023, after the April 2021 explosion at the Leonard Avenue plant killed one worker and injured eight. Investigators blamed a reactor manway cover that was not properly designed, built or tested, plus weak emergency planning, thin training and no effective evacuation alarm.

The plant sits in a northeast Columbus neighborhood where people as far away as Whitehall and Westerville heard the 2021 blast.
